Using ARP-spoofing an attacker can, for example, easily launch a man-in-the-middle attack to eavesdrop, alter, or redirect any of you network traffic! And worst: all this goes totally unnoticed! The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a stateless protocol used to resolve IP addresses into MAC addresses which resides in layer 2 of the ISO-OSI protocol stack. Most end-user firewalls do not operate at layer 2 but rather protect the higher network layers starting on from layer 3 upwards. As a result, they do can not detect ARP-based attacks. XArp has been specially designed and engineered for to fill this gap To detect ARP-driven attacks, XArp uses two techniques: inspection modules and network discovery. Several different inspection modules exist that can be employed on each network interface that inspect every incoming and outgoing ARP packet. Some of these modules have a static inspection (for example checking the packets for valid IP addresses in respect to your network interface configuration), others are stateful and build up databases with information gathered from ARP packets to detect intrusive behaviour. The second technique are network discoverers, which XArp uses to quickly build up and maintaines databases which are used by the inspection modules to base their descisions. Further more, network discovery is used to validate current database entries and to actively expose attackers. Two different user interfaces help to quickly get XArp up and running in no time and, on the other hand, allow experienced users, network administrators, and researchers to dig deeper into ARP security.
